SCAM ALERT
04 July 2026 The municipality has been alerted to a scam involving a fraudster using the name “Mthombeni.”
Please note:
The scam involves phone calls (0716810708) and WhatsApp (0661966987) messages falsely claiming that the recipient’s electricity account has a “ticket of cut off” or is scheduled for disconnection.
The caller or sender demands payment of R1,500.00 to avoid disconnection.
The fraudster may use pressure tactics, urgent language, or request payment via informal methods (mobile money, vouchers, bank transfer to private accounts, or cash).
What you should do:
Do not pay any money or share your banking or personal details in response to such calls or messages.
Official municipal notices of disconnection are delivered in writing and include account and reference details; the municipality will never demand immediate payment through private accounts or WhatsApp.
If you receive a suspicious call or message, hang up and verify by contacting the municipality directly on the official phone number, on the municipality’s website or your account statement.
Report the incident to municipal contact centre and to the South African Police Service (SAPS). If possible, save the WhatsApp message and any call details (phone number, time, content) to help with the investigation.
